County teams from Orkney have been competing against neighbouring Shetland since 1919 and frequently compete in the Island Games. In 2012, the Orkney Amateur Football Association (OAFA) embarked on a strategy of seeking further games against teams from the Highlands & Islands.
With the advent of new all-weather surfaces in Orkney, playing football out-with the traditional summer period became a possibility. Subsequent to seeking and gaining admission to the North Caledonian FA, an open meeting was called by Orkney Amateur FA which led to the formation of Orkney Football Club.
They currently play at various grounds in Orkney, including Pickaquoy Centre, Kirkwall Grammar School and Dounby.
